Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts by Tong Wang Trailer

Read original
Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts, originally titled “Chang Ye Jiang Jin,” is one of the standout titles to emerge from the Shanghai International Film Festival, blending social commentary with a dark crime thriller narrative. Directed by Tong Wang, the work gradually transforms from a seemingly grounded depiction of contemporary social issues into a far more unsettling and complex exploration of loneliness, aging, and human connection. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Chinese society grappling with the challenges of an aging population and limited social welfare structures, the story follows Ye Xiaolin, portrayed by Wan Qian. Xiaolin works as a mysterious caregiver hired by wealthy families who are too preoccupied with work and wealth to care for their elderly relatives themselves. However, her presence appears to coincide with a troubling pattern, as many of the elderly individuals under her care tend to die unexpectedly. Her life begins to change when she encounters Ma Deyong, played by Rao Xiaozhi, a quiet zookeeper whose closest companion is an aging lion. As the two develop a fragile relationship, they find themselves bound by a shared role: caring for the old in a society increasingly obsessed with youth, wealth, and efficiency. Through their interactions, the narrative gradually unfolds into a meditation on compassion, mortality, and the meaning of love. As the characters confront suffering and the inevitability of death, the story suggests that true intimacy lies in the ability to understand and share another person’s pain. With its stylized approach and unsettling themes, “Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts” promises a dark yet emotionally resonant experience when it premieres on March 21, 2026.
